Effect of Resistance Spot Welding and Laser Welding on Nickel Tab for Electric Vehicle Battery Development

dc.descriptionThe study investigated the effectiveness of using resistance spot welding and laser welding techniques for joining similar nickel materials in the development of electric vehicle (EV) batteries. The joint microstructure and stress values were analyzed for both methods. The results indicated that both methods were successful in joining the nickel materials. The stress values for the laser welding method were higher, with an average of 155.86 MPa, compared to the resistance spot welding method, which had an average of 122.25 MPa. FESEM analysis showed that the length of the surface for the material being connected affects the stress value. The resistance spot welding method produced better control of penetration depth and a sound weld bead with a welding time of 0.09 s. On the other hand, laser welding produced a better weld interface, contributing to a higher strength value. Overall, the study demonstrated the potential of both techniques in joining similar nickel materials for the development of EV batteries, with laser welding producing higher strength values but resistance spot welding offering better control of penetration depth.
