The study focuses on investigating the adhesion properties of commercial adhesive cements to zirconia, which is a superior dental restoration material with excellent mechanical strength, aesthetics, and biocompatibility. Zirconia's inert chemical nature has limited its use due to the difficulty in creating a reliable and durable adhesion to its surface. However, the use of functional monomers such as MDP has increased the bond strength of cementing materials to zirconia. The prepared zirconia samples were divided into two groups, with and without surface treatment. The surface roughness of the samples was measured using an electronic profilometer, and the microstructure of zirconia was characterized. The surface-treated zirconia exhibited higher surface roughness than untreated zirconia. Sintering at 1500°C resulted in good microstructural density without grain pull-out, and zirconia in the tetragonal phase with few monoclinic phases. The bonding effect of cement depends on its ability to penetrate the irregularities of the substrate, and its mechanical properties are influenced by the total filler content. A total filler content of 43 wt% can improve mechanical properties and reduce solubility. By modifying the surface roughness, cell attachment can be further promoted. The results of this study could contribute to the development of better cementing materials and procedures for dental restoration using zirconia.
